Purification of
Plastics
Polycycl’s purification technologies help recover upcycled resins from hard-to-recycle plastics such as Tetrapak and multi-layered packaging.
Polycycl’s purification technologies focus on building advancements in delamination, de-inking and solvent based purification methods, with a goal to recover upcycled polymers that are substantively free of contamination.
Solvent based approach to upcycling
The solvent extraction process starts by isolating the target plastic resin from a mixed waste stream. The isolated resin is then dissolved in one or more carefully selected solvents to obtain a homogenised solution.
Additives, colorants, odorants and other non-plastic contaminants are then removed from this homogenised solution using a series of physical separation and chemical-assisted steps.
The filtrate left behind contains the purified plastic in a dissolved form. The purified resin is then re-precipitated and recovered by addition of a non-solvent to the filtrate mix. The end result is a purified resin that may be used for manufacturing of new plastic articles.
The entire process operates at relatively low temperature and pressure and uses non-hazardous solvents which are recovered and re-circulated.
The development of these technologies is presently at TRL-4 readiness.
